George Bradley, Professor of Communication and Theatre
Following two years of teaching at Eastern New Mexico University and five at the State University of New York at Buffalo, I joined the Sul Ross faculty in 1975 as the Chair of Speech and Drama. In 1990, I became the Chair of Fine Arts and Communication. Greg Schwab became the chair at the beginning of the Fall 1998 semester; I retired to half-time in 2000 and completely retired in 2005. During those 30 years I directed and acted in more than 25 shows. Communication courses which I taught included: Introduction to Speech Communication, Basic Television, Small Group Communication, Public Discourse, Family Communication, Critical Reasoning, Mass Media, Human Relationships, Intercultural Communication, Video Workshop, Web Page Design, and Adculture. I served as director of the theatre, debate coach, and as the production supervisor for the on-campus television station, SRTV. I am the designer and webmaster of The Arts in West Texas ; webmaster of the Big Bend Sierra Club website; designer and webmaster of the Alpine Humane Society; and I maintain the Humane Society's site on Petfinder.com. I also serve as secretary of the Alpine Humane Society.
For over 30 years I had the good fortune to work with thousands of students, and I never tired of watching students as they metamorphosed from wide-eyed freshmen into confident capable graduates. My philosophy is to follow the "yellow brick road" to wherever it goes, and I encourage students to do the same. If in the process, we all gain a bit of courage, heart, and wisdom, it will make the immense journey worthwhile. My long range plan is to stay interested in whatever I'm doing; for my students, I simply wanted them to find out what they were capable of, to respect themselves and others, to see learning as a lifetime activity, and to live a happy life. My parting advice: just be aware that once you hit 50 the minutes will become seconds--until then, pay attentiion.
My hobbies include reading, watching TV (D'oh!), motorcycle riding,
oil painting, traveling, surfing the net, geneology research, and a hell of
a lot of golf. (Best round on the Alpine course: 71 during the summer of 2008, when I was 70 years old; a par on the last hole and I would of shot my age. The lesson? I need to either play better or get older.) My wife, Janie, works in the
Sul Ross Human Resources Center. Her son Todd, wife Tera, and grandson Tristan Patrick Knight, born on May 3, 2005, live in Lubbock, TX. My son, Mark,
owns his own business, CIAO
CHOW CATERING (In Austin, look for the big sign for CHOW CHOW CATERING at Hwy 2222 and ISH 35)
. Mark graduated from Eastern New Mexico University and
has lived in Austin since 1983. Mark, wife Karen, and Karen's daughter, Samantha, age 14,
live in Austin with the youngest member of the Bradley family, granddaughter Mia
Lacy Kendall Bradley, age 7. Heather Bradley-Francis, my daughter, is employed
by Scott and White Hospital/Texas A & M University as a Research Associate, specializing in cancer research. Heather is currently (2/09) about 1 1/2 years from completing her Doctor of Medicine at Texas A & M. She lives in Temple with my granddaughters, Taylor
Christine, age 17, and Nicole Renee, age 10. Heather graduated from SRSU in 1990. She started graduate course work at Texas A& M in the fall of 2007.

I was born in Commerce, OK (yes, an Okie), and grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas. During the summers of 1962-65, I directed authentic melodramas for the Imperial Players, located in Cripple Creek, CO. In June 2000, I attended a reunion in Cripple Creek of former employees of the hotel, including some I'd known for 51 years.
In 2002, I reached retirement age and had to seriously worry about what I was going to do with the huge amount of "stuff" in my office. Janie said I couldn't have the garage, so we had a new one built in the backyard. The official date of my retirement was August 31, 2000. I, however, continued teaching half-time for the communication program, teaching two courses in the fall and two in the spring. My retirement reception was held on July 28, 2000, in the University Center. I fully retired following the Spring 2005 semester. However, I continue to maintain The Arts in West Texas webpage for Sul Ross as well as maintain several webpages for Fine Arts and Communication, including Theatre Archives and Theatre Productions.
FLASH!!! Got my first ever hole-in-one
on Friday, July 2, 1999. 170 yard par 3,
using a Wildthing II 7-wood. Life is good. Got
number two on January 18, 2003. Hit an XPC 6-iron on the number14 hole
at the Alpine Country Club course. From 175 yards on this par 3 hole, the ball went into the hole on
the first bounce.
FLASH NUMBER TWO!!! My son, Mark, and Karen Jacobs were married on Sept. 9, 2000, at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Tx. The wedding featured a dinner Friday evening at the Gage; a 9 hole "Flatbelly Tourney" at the Alpine Country Club Saturday morning; and the wedding, dinner, and dance Saturday evening. Family and friends of the bride and groom enjoyed the beautiful ceremony, tasty food, and good old shit-kickin' music, provided by Austin based Dale Watson and his Lone Stars. Mark, Karen, and granddaughter, Samantha, live just outside Austin.
