Dr. Velasco’s research primarily focuses on communication and emotion within family contexts and other personal relationships. His research also investigates the cognitive bases of relationships and their influences on interpersonal, relational, and family communication. Much of this research investigates parenting and emotion socialization in how communication environments, created within families, influence how children experience, express, and regulate emotion.
In addition to his research program on emotion and family communication, Dr. Velasco also investigates families in crisis. He has a synergistic partnership with the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend with the intentions of researching families experiencing various crises, learning from the practitioners who provide care, and contributing to their training as it is informed by his research.
